The Director-General of Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola in the June 12, 1993, presidential election, Senator Jonathan Silas Zwingina, has died.
The former Senator reportedly died on Wednesday at the age of 70 in Abuja after a protracted illness.
Adamawa-born Zwingina headed the MKO campaign as the DG of the ‘Hope ’93’ presidential campaign organisation of Nigerian millionaire Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 1993 election.
The election was annulled by former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (Retd).
Zwingina was a former Senator representing Adamawa Southern Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate from 1999 to 20007.
He was one of the founding members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) where he was elected in 1999 and reelected in April 2003.
He served on the Senate Committees of Works and Housing, Establishment, Internal Affairs, Information, Special Projects, Privatization and Economic Affairs.
Zwingina’s residence in Abuja was demolished in 2007, allegedly on the orders of former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai.
