The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia has once again recorded a major medical feat with the successful completion of its 13th kidney transplant surgery on Monday, June 2, 2025, ABN TV reports.

The transplant, carried out by the hospital’s dedicated renal team, marks another milestone in FMC Umuahia’s growing legacy as a centre of excellence in kidney care and transplant medicine in Nigeria.

Confirming the development in an exclusive interview with ABN TV, the Chief Medical Director of FMC Umuahia, Professor Onyebuchi Azubuike, expressed gratitude to God for the success of the procedure and reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to advancing renal healthcare.

“Today, by the grace of God, we have successfully done the 13th kidney transplant operation at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia,” Prof. Azubuike said. “And it’s going to be very regular from now going forward.”

He revealed that the hospital is actively working toward the establishment of a permanent renal transplant complex within the centre—a promise he made upon assumption of office.

“These cases we are doing serve as an advocacy tool to build a permanent renal transplant complex inside FMC,” he stated. “By God’s grace, before this year runs out, that will likely happen.”

Prof. Azubuike also disclosed that the 14th transplant is already in view, noting that FMC will continue to perform more transplant surgeries in the coming weeks as part of its sustained efforts to save lives and expand access to specialized medical care.
