Diaz weaved past several Argentina players before firing past goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez to hand struggling Colombia a shock lead with 24 minutes played.
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández was then sent off in the second half for a high boot that landed a bloody blow on Kevin Castaño’s forehead, before a subdued Lionel Messi was replaced.
Thiago Almada drew Argentina level with just nine minutes remaining when he fired into the bottom corner beyond Kevin Mier’s desperate dive.
The point keeps Colombia sixth in the hunt to secure an automatic qualifying spot, while extending their winless streak to six games.
Argentina remain top of the CONMEBOL qualification table with 35 points from 16 games, while rivals Brazil secured their spot at the World Cup with a win over Paraguay.
