Saturday 29th, June 2024.
If Soji had known that he would breathe his last breath on the earth last Saturday afternoon, perhaps he would have prayed and done everything humanly possible to stop this calamity that cut his life short in broad daylight.
Soji was a bouncer, a promising younger man, whose wife is heavily pregnant.
Soji woke up on Saturday morning, took his bath, dressed up and headed straight to ILAJI Hotels and Sports Resort in Akanran, Ona Ara local government area of Ibadan in the company of his colleagues.
Their job was to maintain orders and prevent uninvited guests into the hall located inside the ILAJI Hotels and Sports Resort.
Around ten-thirty in the morning, guests had begun to arrive, the event centre was already sparkling for activities, the birthday celebrant had arrived, music was blaring, variety of foods and assorted drinks were being served.
Yet, Soji caught no wind of catastrophe hung on his head.
Around eleven, two men came to the entrance of the hall, the men were in their mufti but obviously armed to the teeth.
Soji’s eyes caught the firearms on these men and he guessed these men could be police or DSS officers.
Soji guessed right; these men are DSS officers attached to the ILAJI Hotels and Sports Resort for security purposes.
Yes, according to the ethic of their profession, bouncers must not allow firearms into such closed gathering.
Soji called the attention of these DSS officers to the danger of taking firearms into the hall but these officers did not take Soji’s caution for a humble advice but rather as an insult or a confrontation. After a little argument, these DSS officers were allowed to go in while Soji and his partner, Yinka, continued to do the job they were paid to do.
One of these DSS officers who was later identified as Ayomide Iyonuoluwa, was not satisfied with the way he said Soji challenged them, he wanted to deal with those bouncers, those bloody civilians.
Officer Ayomide left his seat and headed straight to the entrance of the hall to deal with Soji.
Soji saw officer Ayomide coming towards the entrance of the hall as he was obviously covered with aggression and he tried to run away from him in order to prevent further provocation, officer Ayomide Iyonuoluwa ran after Soji towards the back of the hall.
Soji fell and officer Ayomide shot him twice in the back at close range in cold blood.
Soji, an expectant father gave up the ghost before he was rushed to the hospital.
