The Abuja Chapter of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) Great Ekenhuaites Association has expressed outrage and unequivocal condemnation over the brutal assault and abduction of Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki by a group of misguided youths purporting to act on behalf of the Oba of Benin’s palace. The association’s reaction follows the disturbing viral videos showing the humiliation and physical assault meted out to Dr. Obaseki, a respected alumnus of the University of Benin.
In a statement signed by the association’s Chairperson, Stella Nwabuche, the group described the incident as a stark reminder of Nigeria’s lingering challenges in protecting citizens from mob violence and vigilantism. “Watching the viral videos was a painful reminder that we still have a long way to go in safeguarding our citizens against such barbaric acts,” Nwabuche said.
The association questioned the rationale behind the attack, noting that Dr. Obaseki is a well-known proponent of Edo culture and traditions, with a deep reverence for the Oba of Benin’s institution. His body of work, including plays like “Obaseki” and “Ovoramwen,” testifies to his commitment to promoting Bini heritage. “It is perplexing that someone who has spent over 35 years championing Edo culture would be branded an enemy of the palace,” Nwabuche remarked.
The statement hinted at possible political undertones to the incident, calling for a thorough investigation to unravel the masterminds behind the attack. The association has appealed to the Edo State government to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice and to the Oba of Benin to publicly dissociate the palace from this reprehensible act.
Furthermore, the group has petitioned the Inspector General of Police to intervene and conduct an exhaustive probe into the matter. “We demand justice for Dr. Obaseki and an end to such mob actions that undermine our collective values and rule of law,” Nwabuche emphasized.
The UNIBEN Great Ekenhuaites Association is an organization of alumni who attended the Ekenhuan campus of the University of Benin.
