NYSC Member Visiting Home Killed By Vigilante Who Mistook Him For Bike Thief

A Benue State vigilante group tortured a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to death after he was mistaken for Motorcycle thief.

The police command in Benue State has arrested at least two suspects in connection with the killing.

In a tragic case of mistaken identity, the serving NYSC member, Benjamin Msughaondo Une, was beaten to death by a community vigilante group in Buruku Local Government Area, Benue State.

The incident occurred near the Buruku Local Government Secretariat in Benue State, late Sunday night on April 19, 2026.

The Chairman of Buruku LGA, Raymond Aondoakura, has condemned the act and announced the immediate suspension and disbandment of all vigilante activities in the area pending proper regulation.

According to the development, the vigilantes intercepted Une during a night patrol at Mbajor settlement and accused him of being a motorcycle thief.

One of the vigilante leaders allegedly started beating him before he could present his identification.

He fell into a coma and was later confirmed dead at a hospital.

Une was reportedly serving in Gombe State and was home on a short break just weeks before his final clearance and Passing Out Parade (POP).

In reaction, the Benue State Government has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter.

Following the order, the Benue State Police Command quickly arrested at least two suspects.

The NYSC PRO in Benue State, Veronica Ogwuche, confirmed that initial reports indicate the deceased was serving in Gombe State.
