INEC Sets Date For By-Elections In 6 States To Refill Jimoh Ibrahim Senate Seat, Others

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced Saturday, June 20, 2026, for the conduct of by-elections in six states, to be held concurrently with the Ekiti State governorship election scheduled for the same date.

In a statement signed by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, the commission disclosed the date during a brief ceremony held at the INEC Headquarters in Abuja to formally welcome a newly sworn-in National Commissioner, Rear Admiral Jamila Malafa (rtd.).

Amupitan explained that the by-elections would cover four senatorial vacancies in Enugu, Nasarawa, Rivers and Ondo States, as well as a State House of Assembly seat in Kebbi State and a House of Representatives seat in Kano State.

“The senatorial seats declared vacant in Enugu, Nasarawa, Rivers and Ondo States will be filled, alongside the Kebbi State House of Assembly seat and the House of Representatives seat in Kano State,” the INEC Chairman stated.

In Ondo, the senatorial seat became vacant following the resignation of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who has resumed as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

The Rivers senatorial seat was left empty following the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi, while in Nasarawa State, Senator Godiya Akwashika passed away, and in Enugu State, Senator Okey Ezea also died, creating the vacancies.

Kano State will conduct a House of Representatives election, while Kebbi State will hold a poll for a vacant seat in its State House of Assembly.

Amupitan reaffirmed INEC’s readiness to deliver credible and transparent elections across all affected areas on June 20, 2026.
