JAMB Okays Personal Computers For UTME From 2027

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has approved the use of personal computers by candidates for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) from 2027.

JAMB Registrar, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, announced the decision on Tuesday in Abuja during a meeting with CBT centre owners and other key stakeholders.

Oloyede explained that candidates who owned or had access to laptops could now take the examination on their personal devices, provided the computers meet the board’s minimum technical specifications.

The move is part of JAMB’s broader strategy to expand access and reduce the pressure on accredited CBT centres across the country.

Oloyede disclosed that a dedicated application would be made available for download ahead of the 2027 UTME, allowing candidates to install the examination interface on their personal computers.

He added that the board would implement a remote proctoring system to monitor candidates and prevent malpractice during the examination.

“Technology has advanced enough to allow us to do this securely. Candidates will be monitored through their webcams, and artificial intelligence tools will flag any suspicious behaviour,” Oloyede said.

The JAMB boss stressed that personal computers would only be permitted for candidates in areas with reliable internet connectivity and stable power supply.

Oloyede also noted that the board would publish a list of approved computer models and technical specifications to guide candidates.

The National Association of CBT Centre Operators (NACBTCO) expressed reservations about the policy, warning that it could lead to a sharp decline in patronage of registered centres.

The association’s President, Mr Adewale Adeyemi, called on JAMB to delay implementation until adequate safeguards were put in place.

JAMB, however, insisted that the policy would take effect from the 2027 UTME, with a pilot test scheduled for later this year to assess the system’s readiness.

The board also announced plans to collaborate with internet service providers to offer subsidised data plans for candidates using personal computers.

Oloyede assured that candidates without access to personal computers or reliable internet would not be disadvantaged, as CBT centres would remain available.

The 2026 UTME recorded over 2.1 million registrations, with candidates often traveling long distances to sit for the examination at JAMB-accredited centres.
