Five Islamic clerics were reportedly kidnapped while returning from a special prayer meeting for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election at the Talata Mafara, Zamfara State residence of former State Governor, Senator Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari, the Director General of the campaign organisation for the the Nigerian leader.
The five were reportedly abducted on Saturday, September 12, 2026, shortly after attending the gathering at Yari’s residence.
About 2,800 (some reports quoted up to 3,000) Islamic clerics gathered in Zamfara State for a special prayer session seeking divine guidance for President Bola Tinubu and support for his administration’s policies and programmes.
The abducted victims were identified as:
- Imam Yahuza, the First Jumma’at Imam in Dogon Madacci
- Magawata Abdullahi, the Second Jumma’at Imam in Dogon Madacci
- Malam Shehu Dakko
- Imam Bala Fagon and
- Na’ibi Tasi’u of Tungar Nagudai.
The unfortunate clerics reportedly travelled from communities in Bakura and Talata Mafara Local Government Areas to attend the prayer gathering.
Their reported abduction has raised fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in Zamfara, particularly as the incident allegedly occurred in connection with a gathering at the residence of Yari, a former Governor, serving senator and Director-General of Tinubu’s 2027 presidential campaign.
The identities of the abductors and their whereabouts remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the reported abductions.
The clerics also prayed for sustained success of the military in the fight against terrorism and other security challenges, as well as for peace and stability in the country ahead of the 2027 elections.
The prayer gathering was organised by Senator Abdul’aziz Yari and held at his residence in Talata Mafara.
He said the initiative was part of ongoing consultations with religious leaders in the state aimed at seeking spiritual intervention for national challenges, while also urging clerics to promote peace, unity, and coexistence among Nigerians.
