Police Unveil Findings On Lagos Mushin Suspected ‘Bomb’ Explosion
The Lagos State Command of the Nigerian police says that the Mushin incident was a mechanical explosion from a pressurised component failure outside a vehicle, causing shattered glass and minor injuries with no link to terrorism or IED.
SP Abimbola Adebisi, Police Public Relations Officer of the
Lagos State Command, gave the clarification in a statement of Thursday, 25th June 2026.
In the statement titled: UPDATE ON MUSHIN EXPLOSION, Adebisi wrote: “The Command is pleased to inform the good people of Lagos State and Nigerians at large that the investigation has conclusively established that the incident was not caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), terrorist activity, sabotage, or any form of criminal use of explosives.
“Technical findings revealed no traces of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues, or blast characteristics ordinarily associated with explosive attacks.
“Investigation established that the incident resulted from the catastrophic failure of a pressurized mechanical component outside the vehicle.
“This failure generated a sudden release of energy which caused the shattering of the vehicle’s front passenger side glass panels and resulted in minor injuries to the occupant.
“Based on these findings, the incident has been professionally classified as a Mechanical Explosion.”
The explosion on Monday June 21 was suspected to be from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), in the busy Mushin Market.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr Fatai Tijani, visited the scene and assured residents that the Shoe Materials Market in the Mushin area, where the blast occurred, remained safe following the Monday morning explosion.
Security operatives had conducted a comprehensive sweep of the area.
Tijani said the police received information about an explosion and immediately deployed Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operatives to cordon off and secure the area.
According to him, preliminary findings indicated that the explosion was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted under a vehicle, which the new statement has now dismissed.
