President, Governors, Lawmakers: Who Is Accountable To Nigerians?
By
Hon. Rahman Owokoniran
Public office is a responsibility, not a reward. Nigerians deserve results, not excuses.
From President Bola Tinubu, all state governors and members of the National to state assemblies, political office holders must openly account for their performance, spending and promises to the Nigerian people.
At a time when families are battling rising living costs, insecurity, unemployment, poor electricity and deteriorating public services, leaders must not hide behind political speeches, party loyalty or endless promises.
Citizens must challenge public office holders to provide clear answers to basic questions:
* What have you promised, and what have you delivered?
* How many jobs have you created, especially for young Nigerians?
* What concrete action have you taken to reduce the hardship facing citizens?
* What measurable results have you achieved in security, electricity, healthcare and education?
* How much public money have you received, how was it spent, and what evidence can Nigerians see?
* Who takes responsibility when promises are broken and public resources fail to improve people’s lives?
This challenge applies to every level of government. The President must account for Federal policies and results.
Governors must account for state resources and services.
Lawmakers must explain their legislative work, constituency representation and use of public funds entrusted to them.
No leader should be above scrutiny. No political party should be an excuse for failure. No public office holder should demand praise without presenting evidence of performance.
We must call for public performance scorecards, transparent spending records, measurable targets and regular town-hall engagements where citizens can question their leaders directly.
The central question is simple. If public funds are being spent in the name of Nigerians, why should Nigerians not demand proof of what those funds have achieved?
Leadership must be measured by results, not rhetoric. Nigerians deserve transparency, responsibility and consequences where misconduct is established.
The era of asking citizens for patience without showing them results must end. Every public office holder owes Nigerians an account and the Nigerian people have every right to demand it.
