An untold number of people have been killed as suspected herdsmen launched a violent house-to-house attack on a community in Mararaba, in the suburbs of Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory.
The attackers reportedly stormed Aso, in Mararaba in what residents described as a retaliatory assault from an earlier dispute involving a farmer.
The gunmen reportedly invaded the area, attacking residents indiscriminately and forcing many families to flee their homes for safety.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants were armed with dangerous weapons.
They moved from house to house, leaving several people injured while others were feared killed.
Some houses were also reportedly destroyed during the attack, worsening fears among residents in nearby communities.
Residents said the attack created confusion and fear across the Mararaba axis, with many people abandoning their homes overnight.
Some victims sustained injuries, while others remain unaccounted for as security agencies continue efforts to assess the situation.
Security agencies were yet to release an official casualty figure, while community leaders have called for urgent government intervention to prevent further violence.
The latest incident has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in communities bordering Abuja, where residents have repeatedly demanded increased security presence to protect lives and property.
