APC Leaders Shaken As Tinubu Tells 37 Lawmakers To Bow To Impeached Speaker Obasa

Feelers from the All Progressives Congress (APC) indicate that leaders of the party are not at peace with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s intervention that finally saved the job of the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, and guaranteed his return to the saddle.

This development came after Tinubu brokered peace among the warring factions of the 40-member Lagos State House of Assembly whom he hosted at Aso Rock on Wednesday afternoon.

Investigations by TheNewsGiant show that leaders of APC feel the President should have allowed Obasa kiss the dust, especially as he had lost the confidence of majority of the House of Assembly as well as the state party hierarchy.

Obasa had been voted out as Speaker on January 13, 2025, by 37 of the 40 lawmakers over allegations of high-handedness, financial misappropriation, and despotic leadership.

In the place of impeached Obasa, his Deputy Speaker Hon. Mojisola Meranda was appointed as Speaker.

“What happened at Aso Rock yesterday cannot be more than window-dressing,” said a chieftain of the party who spoke to TheNewsGiant. “How can the President subsume the will and action taken by 37 of 40 lawmakers and you expect things to go smoothly?”

The party leader said they were especially at variance with the President’s step because it rubbished the efforts of former Governors Olusegun Osoba and Bisi Akande, as well as the Governing Advisory Council, who had all mediated in the rift.

Although such elders had advocated for the temporary return of Obasa, his reinstatement as Speaker would only enable him a “soft landing” and he would retire with some dignity.

Short-lived Speaker Meranda would later resign the post on March 3, following interventions by leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at both the national and state levels.

This paved way for Obasa re-election as Speaker, while Meranda reverted to being Deputy Speaker.
