The kidnapped Sarkin Gobir of Gatawa District in Sokoto State, Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa, has been killed by bandits after weeks in captivity and failure to provide his ransom.

Nigeria’s former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and the Runner-Up for the opposition PDP in the last election bemoaned the killing, and blaming it on the “failure of government to show concern or devise effective security strategies.”

Bawa and his son were abducted in July while traveling from Sokoto to Sabon Birni.

The bandits opened fire on their vehicle, which then crashed and allowed the attackers to seize the Emir and his driver, who is also his son.

Days after the abduction, the kidnappers demanded a N1 billion ransom for their release.

A video later surfaced online showing the Emir pleading for his life in Hausa language and urging the government to intervene.

He said their lives are in danger in the hands of their abductors, adding that they had been suffering in the forests where they are currently held.

After waiting in vain for the ransom, the bandits ultimately executed the Sarkin Gobir.

Mourning the killing, Atiku wrote:

“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un.

“I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the entire community of Gobir Emirate and the government of Sokoto State on the tragic loss of Sarkin Gobir, HRH Alh. Isa Bawa, District Head of Gatawa District in Sabon Birni local Government.

“The heinous act of violence perpetrated by bandits resulting in the untimely demise of such a revered leader is a stark reminder of the pressing need for enhanced security measures in safeguarding the lives and property of citizens.

“The failure of government to show concern or devise effective security strategies has undoubtedly contributed to the escalation of such distressing events in recent times.

“It is important to reiterate that government must provide security that will ensure the protection of lives, such that individuals do not have to live in fear of falling victims to senseless acts of violence.

“May the Almighty Allah accept the soul of Alhaji Isa Bawa and  grant his bereaved family and people the fortitude to bear his loss. Amin.”
