Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has lost his traditional title of ‘Wazirin Adamawa’ following the restructuring of emirates and chiefdoms in the state.

The restructuring also affects Adamawa State’s Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, as well as ex-Governor Boni Haruna, and several other dignitaries in the North-East state.

Atiku Abubakar was named the new Waziri of Adamawa by the Adamawa Emirate Council in June 2017.

The former Vice President, who had held the title ‘Turakin Adamawa’ succeeded the Late Abba Mohammed.

Atiku’s son, Aliyu, took over his father title of Turakin.

Waziri is one of the most important titles in the Adamawa Emirate, and is akin to the Prime Minister post in the Adamawa Kingdom.

Fintiri announced the decision during the coronation of the newly installed Chief of Madagali, emphasizing that all District Heads must now align with the newly created emirates and chiefdoms.

He explained that traditional titles previously conferred under the old jurisdictions were no longer valid.

He also stated that the Lamido of Adamawa could submit Atiku’s and others’ names for reconsideration,  but any reappointment would require his final approval.

The restructuring affects titles originally bestowed under the Adamawa and Mubi emirates. As a result, Fintiri relinquishes his title of Sarki Yaki Mubi, Atiku loses his position as Waziri Adamawa, while Haruna forfeits Makama Mubi, among others impacted by the changes.

To ensure a smooth transition, the Governor directed traditional councils in the newly formed emirates to propose fresh titles for approval in accordance with customary laws.
