Brake Failed, Pleads Man, 20, Driving His Mum’s Car That Crushed Police Sergeant In Lagos
A 20-year-old driver, Olumide Olusola, who allegedly killed a police Sergeant, Johnson Okediji, during a stop-and-search duty along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, Lagos, has blamed the accident on the car’s faulty brakes.
Speaking in a brief interview with journalists during his parade at the police headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos, Olusola said the brakes failed on the vehicle reportedly owned by his mother.
“I did not kill the policeman intentionally, it was due to the vehicle’s brake failure,” he said.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, disclosed that the sad incident occurred on Saturday, 26th September 2026.
According to CP Fatai, police officers had signalled a Lexus ES 350, with number plate FKJ 223 KX, driven by Olumide Olusola, to stop.
The driver reportedly stopped initially, but suddenly sped off as Sergeant Okediji approached the driver’s side.
The police boss added that the suspect knocked down the Sergeant and dragged him underneath the vehicle for several metres despite repeated attempts by police officers and passers-by to stop him.
He said the driver was eventually chased and arrested.
The officer sustained multiple fractures and serious injuries to the head.
He was taken to a nearby hospital and subsequently referred to LASUTH, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival.
CP Fatai said: “His remains have been deposited at Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the vehicle has been recovered to the station.”
