Edo State’s Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has announced his ambition to contest the governorship election in 2024.

Shaibu has served as the Deputy Governor to Governor Godwin Obaseki for two terms since 2016.

Both had fallen out over Obaseki’s perceived support for another aspirant from Edo South.

Like the last Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Shaibu hails from Edo North Senatorial District.

With the current Governor from the Edo North, it is generally agreed that the next Governor should come from Edo Central, according to an informal rotation arrangement.

Declaring his intention on Monday, Shaibu expressed his intent to vie for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ticket during the upcoming primaries.

Shaibu said: “The project for me to be the governor of Edo State is not just mine; it’s a collective one. We have decided in Edo State that the original boy, 100 per cent, has to be the governor of Edo State.

“After all the consultations we have made, we needed to now make the answer to our consultation known to our people. And the answer is clear: they have asked me to run.”
