Discounting N1,400 Fuel By ₦66 Gross Insult To Nigerians By A Govt That Met Fuel At ₦195 Per Litre -ADC’s Owokoniran
Hon. Rahman Owokoniran, an African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain in the South-West, has questioned the impact of the Federal Government’s ₦66 per litre fuel discount in an era of N1,400, arguing that Nigerians needed sustainable solutions to economic hardship rather than temporary reliefs.
Owokoniran said in a statement in Lagos on Tuesday: “Nigerians feel insulted by this paltry offering of tokenism. For crying out loud, what difference will this discount make to their daily lives? This regime inherited a fuel price of ₦195 per litre.
*What does a ₦66 per litre discount mean to a family struggling to afford food, pay rent, transport their children to school and meet basic needs? Will transport fares reduce? Will food prices fall? And what happens when this temporary relief expires?”
Owokoniran maintained that the discount did not in any way guarantee lower transport fares, cheaper food or improved purchasing power.
He called on the government to move beyond announcements and implement policies that address the root causes of economic hardship.
He further stressed that Nigerians deserved leadership that prioritised security, affordable living, employment opportunities, reliable electricity and the welfare of ordinary citizens.
He offered: “Nigeria needs a new direction built on practical solutions, accountability and people-centred governance.
“The country cannot continue to depend on temporary interventions while millions of citizens struggle to survive.”
He identified Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi, the ADC’s Presidential Candidates, as alternatives for Nigerians to consider, urging citizens to examine the pair’s policy proposals on economic recovery, national security and citizens’ welfare.
“Nigerians deserve more than temporary relief at filling stations. They deserve an economy in which their hard work can provide food, shelter, education and a decent standard of living,” Owokoniran said.
“The real question is not how much government announces in discounts, but how much better the lives of Nigerians become.
“The Nigeria We Desire is Possible With Atiku and Amaechi.”
