The Edo State House of Assembly today Wednesday began
impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.
Shaibu had been at loggerheads with Governor Godwin Obaseki and the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over allegations against him of anti-party activities.
The crisis climaxed when a parallel party primary election declared him the winner and Governorship Candidate for the 2024 off-cycle election, whereas the mainstream party awarded to Hon. Asue Ighodalo, an Obaseki protege.
House Majority Leader, Hon. Charity Aiguobarueghian (PDP Ovia North-East 1), announced the impeachment notice.
According to him, a petition dated Tuesday March 5 against Shaibu, had been signed by 21 of the 24 members of the Legislature.
The petition reportedly was based on charges of perjury and illegal disclosure of government secrets
Aiguobarueghian noted that the total number of legislators, who signed the petition, was higher than the two-thirds constitutional requirement.
Acknowledging the impeachment petition, Speaker of the House, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku (PDP-Owan-West), immediately directed the Clerk, Mr Yahaya Omogbai, to serve the impeachment notice on the Deputy Governor.
Agbebaku also gave Shaibu seven days within which to respond to the notice of impeachment.
