Ex-Coach Amun Named As Head Of Panel Probing Super Falcons’ WAFCON, World Cup Failures

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed former Under-17 Eagles Coach Fanny Amun to head a fact-finding committee to probe the country’s recent international football flops, especially the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The decision follows Nigeria’s disappointing campaign at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where the Super Falcons were eliminated in the quarter-finals before suffering a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the playoff for a place in the Inter-Confederation Playoffs.

Fanny Amun is a Nigerian former football player, who as Coach led the Nigeria national under-17 team to victory at the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Championship.

Ambassador Fanny Amun, will chair the committee, while former Nigeria internationals Ladan Bosso, Desire Oparanozie and Mutiu Adepoju, alongside Dr Alex Mana, will serve as members.

Mr Nasiru Jibril has been appointed Secretary of the committee.

The defeat means Nigeria will miss the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, bringing an end to the Super Falcons’ record of appearing at every edition of the tournament since its inaugural staging in 1991.

The NFF said the committee would examine the setbacks suffered by the national teams and make recommendations aimed at preventing a repeat of such failures.

According to the NFF, the committee’s findings and recommendations will help guide measures to improve Nigeria’s performance in future international competitions.

Amun was appointed Assistant Coach of the Nigeria national team for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.

He was Secretary-General for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and retired as an Assistant Director in the Federal Ministry of Sports in 2007.
