Death has claimed Hajiya Hadiza Attahiru Jega, the wife of the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented the President at the janazah (Islamic funeral rites) on Sunday at the National Mosque in Abuja, and conveyed the President’s condolences.
The Bayero University, Kano (BUK) sent out a message on the death of Mrs. Jega, the wife of its former Vice-Chancellor.
The university, in a statement shared on its official social media page on Sunday, “announce the passing of Hajiya Hadiza Attahiru Jega.”
BUK did not disclose the cause of death but offered prayers and condolences to the family.
It also announced that her Janazah prayer would take place immediately after Zuhr prayer at the National Mosque in Abuja the same day on Sunday, April 5, 2026.
In a condolence message personally addressed to Jega, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
Tinubu wrote: “Dear Professor Jega, it is with a heavy heart that I receive the news of the passing of your beloved wife of over 40 years. Hajiya was an exceptional woman.
“I mourn this painful loss with you and your family and pray that God Almighty grant her Aljannatul Firdaus. I stand with you and your family at this difficult time.”
Northern governors have commiserated with Jega over the sad event.
Chairman of the Northern States’ Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, conveyed the heartfelt condolences of the 19 northern governors to the former INEC chairman.
In a condolence message, Governor Yahaya described the death of Hajiya Hadiza as a painful and profound loss not only to the Jega family but also to all those who were touched by her life of grace, humility and devotion to family values.
The Governor noted that her death has created a deep vacuum in the lives of her loved ones.
