Fact Check: Did Peter Obi Urge Tinubu To Halt Army Salary Increases Until After 2027 Elections?
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu last week approved salary increases of between 30 percent to 80 percent to the nation’s about 250,000 armed forces members, starting September 1, 2026, with junior ranks gaining the most at 80 percent.
Some reports said that NDC Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, suggested delaying the instant implementation of the increases to avoid election-year politics.
However, the news did not show up on his social media hands, including X Twitter.
Obviously, the claim that Peter Obi urged the Nigerian military to reject or delay their newly approved salary increases until after the 2027 elections is false.
Obi never made such a statement.
The claim stems from fabricated social media posts and misattributed online rumors.
Following the military pay hike announcement, doctored graphics and misleading commentary surfaced on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook falsely attributing an anti-military-pay statement to Peter Obi.
Peter Obi previously criticised a proposed 114% salary increase for political office holders and elected politicians by the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), arguing that luxury hikes for politicians were insensitive during economic hardship.
Up to this moment, Obi has made no statement in which he opposed welfare or pay adjustments for active-duty military personnel.
