Nigerian former President Goodluck Jonathan has criticised states governors spending long stretches of their tenure travelling abroad.
Jonathan spoke at the 50th memorial lecture of General Murtala Ramat Mohammed in Abuja.
His criticism came as Nigerians have been lamenting
the frequent foreign tours of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the face of heightened insecurity and socio-economic hardships.
The former President blasted state governors who spend most of their tenure outside the country.
He said: “In a country like the United States, some governors do not leave their states for four years. But here, some of our governors spend 50 per cent of their time outside. So who runs the state? Why will we not have security problems? Coming of age must transcend many things’.
Jonathan also advocated that the nation’s leaders should be between 25 and 50 years.
He argued that political leadership required stamina and resilience which those below 50 years have in abundance.
