(THE NON-FORGETTING INTERNET RECENTLY REGURGITATED THIS MY FACEBOOK POSTING OF 26TH MAY 2017 ON THE ARTICLE’S FOURTH ANNIVERSARY)

I had a ringside seat yesterday for the much-publicised boxing bout between the Jagaban, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, AND former Heavyweight World Boxing Champion Evander Holyfield.

It was planned to be an A-Class event.

But guess who failed to turn up in the ring at Landmark Events Centre, Victoria Island!

Holyfield came. So did the referee, Professor Wole Soyinka, the Nobel Laureate. Local and international journalists flocked the hall, ready to record and report a unique fun event.

Music played with Jimi Jatt on the wheel of steel and some live bands. Femi Kuti gave the performance of his life. Some amateur boxers graced the ring. But people nearly broke their necks craning for the much-expected entrance of the undisputed star of the show.

Finally, Governor Ambode came forward to announce at 10.28pm that the APC National Leader, Tinubu, Holyfield’s hyped opponent, was away on “national assignment.”

He presented a framed picture of Lagos to Evander on behalf of Tinubu. Professor Wole Soyinka, the referee, threw the hall into laughter, joking that since Tinubu was late and the American did not perform a drug test, he had to disqualify the two fighters, so there was no winner.

One old man who sat by me said with disgust:”INTERNATIONAL DISGRACE!”
