Gunmen have attacked and injured members of the Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure, injuring some officials and a crew member.
The players and officials were being conveyed in their team bus from their base in Akure, the Ondo State capital, to Benin, in preparation for a match, when they were waylaid and attacked on the Ore-Benin Expressway.
Michael Akintunde, the Media Officer of the club, who disclosed this in a statement, said that the incident occurred at about 5.30pm on Thursday, December 7, 2023, along the Ore-Benin Expressway.
According to Akintunde, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, officers, later evacuated the injured and shot officials to nearby hospital.
Akintunde said this was as the team was on their way to playing an Elite League tie against Insurance of Benin, scheduled for Saturday.
He reported: “It saddens our hearts to inform Nigerians, especially football lovers that our team was attacked few minutes ago along Ore-Benin Expressway.
“The horrible incident happened to the team as they were on their way to honor an Elite League tie , against Insurance of Benin , scheduled for this weekend.
“Our ball boy was shot in the horrible attack. Also, our team manager and other club officials including players are seriously injured.”
