Kaduna State’s Governor Uba Sani says 137 and not 287 schoolchildren were abducted in Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area.

Sani, howeverhe expressed regrets that a teacher, kidnapped alongside the pupils, died after developing health complications in the captivity of the bandits.

He made the clarification as to the exact figure of schoolchildren abducted, while being interviewed on a Channels Television programme, Sunday Politics.

According to him, all the schoolchildren abducted by gun-wielding bandits were rescued by the military in collaboration with local authorities from neighbouring Zamfara State.

The schoolchildren were abducted from LEA Primary School and Government Secondary School, Kuriga, on March 6.

Defence Headquarters said on Saturday that a total of 137 students were rescued, contrary to reports that 287 children were abducted by bandits.

Governor Sani said the number released by the military remained the authentic figure.

He described “287” as a figment of people’s imagination.
