Kano State’s Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has offered explanations on why he defied the order of Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman of the Federal High Court sitting in Kano and proceeded with reinstalling Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of a reunited Kano.
Yusuf claimed that Justice Liman was in the United States on Thursday while purportedly issuing the interim order against the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano.
He gave the explanation while presenting the appointment letter to Emir Sanusi II on Friday at the Government House in Kano.
He threatened to take up the matter and seek sanctions against the Judge.
In his order, Justice Liman had imposed an interim injunction restraining the Kano State Government, Inspector General of Police, the Kano State Police Commissioner, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Department of State Services (DSS) from enforcing the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024.
The law, passed on Thursday by the state House of Assembly and assented to immediately by Governor Yusuf, dissolved the four emirates carved out of the Kano Emirate in 2019 by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and removed the four emirs.
The injunction came after a suit filed by the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, Aminu Babba Danagundi.
“The person that issued the court order was in America, but he is ordering us to stop what we are doing,” Governor Yusuf stated. “This issue of abuse, I must present before the Governors’ Forum so that we can tackle it accordingly.
“We are following the due process, that’s why we did what we did openly before everybody. Those that are meant to maintain that rule of law must follow it also.”
