Kebbi Gov Creates Dept For Christian Matters First Time In 35 Years
Kebbi State’s Governor Nasir Idris has ordered the Ministry of Religious Affairs to create a Department of Christian Affairs, to be headed by a Christian Director, in the spirit of equity and fairness.
It would be the first time in 35 years that such a department would exist.
He gave the order when the Kebbi State branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) paid him a thank-you visit.
Kebbi State was created on August 27, 1991, by the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, who carved it from Sokoto State (specifically taking the southwestern half).
Christians make up about 16 percent of the population in Kebbi State, where Islam is the dominant religion.
Idris told the association’s members that God put them at the helms of affairs, and they were doing their best to address all challenges facing the populace, with an emphasis on equity and fairness.
According to him, there was no justification whatsoever for the association not to have representation in the Ministry of Religious Affairs, or even to have its own ministry, as was the case in some states.
The Governor thanked the association for their prayers for peace to reign in the state and the country.
He also thanked them for their support in his re-election bid in 2027.
