A Kenyan police officer, Inspector David Maina, accidentally blew up his own hands while discharging  teargas at a street demonstration by protesters in Nairobi.

Kenyans have been gathering in days of protests against the finance bill they said would increase prices of goods and impose higher taxes.

Attached to the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), Maina and colleagues were dispersing protesters in the Nairobi city centre on Tuesday, June 18, when the accident occurred with the explosive.

Police used water cannons and teargas to disperse the protesters.

In the effort, Inspector Maina attempted to fling a teargas canister, which detonated and destroyed his two hands.

He is currently admitted to Nairobi West Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
