After 31 years, the Federal Government of Nigeria says it is now fulfilling its pledge of house allocations to members of the Super Eagles that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
Like the current pronouncement of fulfilled pledges, the last regime of President Muhammadu Buhari had March 2022, also made a public show of redeeming the promise to the team.
Speaking at the official commissioning of the Housing Project under the National Housing Programme (NHP) Phase 1 in Abere, Osun State, President Muhammadu Buhari, who was represented by the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, said houses were then available for the players to pick from.
The Military Government of General Sani Abacha had made the promise to all the Super Eagles, then captained by the Late Stephen Keshi.
Those in the team included the Late Rasheed Yekini and former Super Eagles coaches, Augustine Eguavoen and Emmanuel Amunike.
However, on Wednesday 25th June 2025, through a statement on the website of the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the Tinubu government says the houses are now being allocated.
During a brief ceremony, former striker Efangwu Goziem Ekoku (one of the beneficiaries) represented by his niece Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun, was presented with an allocation letter for a house in Abuja.
Pemi Temitope, Director/HOD Public Building and Housing Development, presented the letter on behalf of the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Architect Ahmed Musa Dangiwa.
Temitope described the move as part of government’s commitment to reward the patriotic service of the team, which brought honour to Nigeria 31 years ago.
The houses are being allocated to members of the team in various states while some are receiving theirs in Abuja.
