Two policemen were reportedly beaten to death by a mob at Ikpeshi in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, following an accident in which their escort vehicle crashed into and killed three people, a baby inclusive.
Two other officers were injured by the mob.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Edo State, Chidi Nwabuzor (Superintendent of Police, SP), confirmed the incident, saying that, the four policemen were from Police Mobile Force (PMF) 19, Port Harcourt in Rivers State.
Things took an ugly turn after an accident, involving a Toyota Hilux vehicle that conveyed escort-duty policemen in the convoy of former Edo House of Assembly member, Hon. Emmanuel Agbaje, crashed with a motorcycle.
The accident immediately claimed the lives of the motorcycle rider, a woman passenger and her child.
As a violent mob gathered, operatives of the Edo State Security Vigilance Network quickly took the policemen into protective custody.
However, irate Ikpeshi youths reportedly broke into the network’s local facility and mobbed two of the policemen to death.
However, the vigilante operatives managed to rescue two other policemen from the crowd, and these are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Condemning the mob attack, Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Council, Tajudeen Alade, declared that those involved would be identified, arrested and prosecuted.
