Held at Barcelona Hotel, Wuse 2, Abuja, the Abuja edition, themed “Built to Rise: Scaling with Skill & Strategy,” brought together bakers from across the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding communities for conversations focused on the realities of building sustainable and profitable baking businesses.

The event marks the next phase of Munro Icing Sugar’s commitment to Nigeria’s baking community, following the successful Lagos edition, Bakers Who Brunch: Rising Beyond the Oven. While the Lagos edition focused on encouraging bakers to think beyond the craft and embrace visibility, strategy and commercial thinking, the Abuja edition deepened the conversation by focusing on how entrepreneurs can translate skill into sustainable business growth.

With more than 100 registered participants, the Abuja gathering provided a platform for bakers to learn from experienced industry voices, exchange experiences and build valuable connections within the baking ecosystem.

A key focus of the Abuja edition was the need for bakers to move beyond technical excellence and develop the business capabilities required to build sustainable enterprises.

The keynote session, “From Skill to Scale: Building a Baking Business That Lasts,” by Ine Thelma Ako, CEO of Rainbow Cakes & Events, explored the realities of transitioning from being a skilled baker to becoming a business owner capable of building systems, managing growth and creating a business that can thrive beyond the founder.

The discussion reinforced a central message of the Bakers Who Brunch initiative: having the skill to bake is only the beginning. Sustainable growth requires strategy, structure, visibility and commercial discipline.

One of the highlights of the Abuja event was the panel discussion themed “What Nobody Tells You About Growing a Baking Business.” The session brought together experienced voices from across the baking and content-creation space, including Comfort Onyemaenu, CEO of Comfort World Cakes; Taiwo Abe, CEO of Classic Cakes & Decors; Felix Obinna (Chef Felz); and Abubakar Aliyu, CEO of Abu Bakery & Cake Studio, who shared practical perspectives on the realities behind building and scaling a baking business.

The conversation moved beyond the polished image often associated with the industry to address the practical questions bakers face as their businesses grow, from building a recognisable brand and attracting customers to managing operations, monetising expertise and identifying opportunities beyond traditional cake sales.

A particularly important theme was the changing definition of what it means to be a baking entrepreneur. For some entrepreneurs, growth may come through expanding a retail baking operation. For others, opportunities can exist in content creation, recipe development, education, collaborations and personal brand building.

The discussion encouraged bakers to think more broadly about their skills and the different ways those skills can be converted into sustainable income streams.

Beyond the keynote and panel sessions, participants also experienced a live masterclass led by baking influencer Chioma Okeahialam, popularly known as Da Recipe Queen, who demonstrated how to use Munro Icing Sugar in the creation of fondant cakes.

The hands-on session provided participants with an opportunity to see the product in application and experience first-hand the qualities that make Munro Icing Sugar suitable for professional baking and decorative applications.

The event also featured a business support initiative designed to recognise and encourage baking entrepreneurs. One baker received a ₦500,000 grand prize, while two additional bakers received ₦300,000 and ₦200,000, respectively, providing financial support to help them further develop their businesses.

Beyond the formal sessions, the Abuja edition created opportunities for participants to network with fellow bakers, exchange experiences and build relationships within the wider baking community.

This community-building element remains central to Munro Icing Sugar’s vision for Bakers Who Brunch. The initiative is designed not simply as a one-day event, but as a platform through which Munro Icing Sugar can continue to engage, educate and support bakers as they navigate an increasingly competitive marketplace.

The Abuja gathering also provided Munro Icing Sugar with an opportunity to listen directly to bakers and better understand the challenges they face, from business growth and customer acquisition to visibility and the tools required to operate more efficiently.

Speaking on the initiative, the General Manager, Commercial, of Brian Munro Limited, Mr. Rilwan Shofunde, reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting entrepreneurs within the baking ecosystem.

“Munro Icing Sugar believes strong brands are built alongside strong entrepreneurs. Our role in the ecosystem extends beyond providing consistent, high-quality icing sugar. We are committed to supporting bakers with platforms, knowledge, and partnerships that enable sustainable growth.”

This vision is reflected in the brand’s continued investment in platforms that bring bakers together, share knowledge and create opportunities for growth. Munro Icing Sugar products, known for their smooth texture, pure white finish and consistent performance, continue to serve professional and home bakers across Nigeria. The brand remains committed to being a dependable partner to the country’s growing baking community.

The Abuja edition represents another step in Munro Icing Sugar’s ambition to build a stronger and more meaningful relationship with Nigeria’s baking community. Following its engagement with bakers in Lagos and Abuja, the brand intends to continue creating opportunities for learning, connection and entrepreneurial development as part of its broader commitment to the sector.

As the baking industry continues to evolve, the message from Bakers Who Brunch remains clear: growth requires more than skill. It requires the strategy, structure and mindset to turn that skill into a business built to rise.
