The National Association of Political Correspondents, NAPOC, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for heeding their calls by conferring national honor on former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission, NEC late Professor Humphrey Nwosu (CON) and two members of NAPOC, former Nasarawa State Deputy Governor Labaran Maku (OON) and former National Assembly Representative from Edo State, Hon. Abdul Oroh (OON).
“On behalf of the National Association of Political Correspondents (NAPC), I extend our heartfelt appreciation and commendation to you for the recent conferment of national honors on distinguished members of our association,” said Deba Uwadiae, Chairman, NAPOC Coordinating Committee.
“This gesture is not only a recognition of their individual excellence, but also a profound acknowledgment of the critical role the political press plays in the sustenance and deepening of democracy in Nigeria.
“By honoring these dedicated professionals, President Bola Tinubu has affirmed the administration’s commitment to press freedom, responsible journalism, and the invaluable contribution of the media to nation-building.
“We are deeply encouraged by this act of recognition and see it as a call to greater service, integrity, and professionalism. The NAPOC remains committed to upholding the ethics of our noble profession, fostering informed political engagement, and supporting the democratic ideals on which our great nation stands.
“Thank you, Mr. President, for your visionary leadership and for this gesture of goodwill toward the Nigerian media community.
In an address to a joint session of the National Assembly marking Nigeria Democracy Day, President Bola Tinubu announced the conferment of national honors to heroes and heroine of the June 12 Election, 1993 struggle.
“As we mark a 26th year of unbroken democracy, it is right to honour those who have made sacrifices in the past, braving all the odds and the guns to ensure we have a regime of democracy in our country,” said President Bola Tinubu.
In March 2025, the National Association of Political Correspondents, NAPOC 1990s called on the Federal Government to honor the former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission, NEC Professor Humphrey Nwosu and to name the Independent National Electoral Commission’s headquarters after him.
According to the association, the former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission, NEC, Professor Humphrey Nwosu deserved a national honor, including renaming the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC after him for his commitment and dedication to an integrous democratic process in Nigeria, especially in the 1990s.
Having covered Professor Humphrey Nwosu at very close quarters and having witnessed his determination to ensure a successful and transparent transition to democracy and civil rule in Nigeria in the 1990s, NAPOC felt it was is imperative that the sacrifices made by Professor Nwosu be highly rewarded.
