Nigerian Soldiers Get Shoot-On-Sight Order Against Terrorists

The Federal Government has ordered frontline troops to shoot terrorists on sight without awaiting further commands.

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa (rtd.), gave the directive on Tuesday while addressing troops in Maiduguri, alongside the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.

The visit followed recent attacks by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province in parts of Borno State.

In a strong message to boost morale and accelerate operations, Musa urged troops to remain resolute and proactive in the battlefield, stressing that they must not wait for further authorisation before confronting terrorists.

“You don’t have to wait for any order from anybody. To find them out is your duty wherever you are deployed. You take them down”, he said, underscoring a more aggressive and responsive military posture.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to the fight against insecurity, Musa disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has approved the procurement of advanced military assets, including aircraft and drones, to enhance surveillance, precision strikes, and operational efficiency.

The Defence Minister commended the courage and sacrifices of Nigerian troops, noting that their resilience continues to inspire national confidence despite the challenges on the frontlines.

“You are making tremendous sacrifices—many have lost their lives, and many have been injured. While we cannot fully compensate you, be assured that your dedication has not gone unnoticed. The President and all Nigerians appreciate your resilience”, he stated.

He maintained that the military has recorded more successes than setbacks in the counter-insurgency campaign, urging citizens to recognise and support the armed forces rather than dwell on isolated challenges.

“We have more victories than defeats, and Nigerians should be proud of the resilience and dedication of our armed forces in safeguarding our nation”, Musa added.

In a move to further boost morale, the minister announced that recently approved salary increments for military personnel would take effect within the next three months, alongside the immediate payment of three months’ salary arrears.

He also cautioned troops against engaging in illegal activities, emphasising professionalism and discipline as critical to the success of the mission.

“Our business here is to go after terrorists and eliminate them. Stay focused, stay disciplined, and do not allow anyone to lure you into wrongdoing”, he warned.

As part of their visit, the ministers met with Borno State authorities, including Deputy Governor Dr Usman Kadafur, reaffirming the Federal Government’s resolve to overhaul security strategies and restore stability across the region. Kadafur described the visit as a clear signal of Abuja’s seriousness in ending insurgency.

Highlighting ongoing efforts to improve troop welfare, Musa inaugurated newly completed housing units for military officers at the Maimalari Barracks, reinforcing the government’s commitment to both operational success and the well-being of personnel.
