Nigerian Who Chose Jail Instead Of Refund After UK Bank Credited His Account With $1.1m In Error
A man reportedly chose a one-year prison sentence instead of paying a fine after his bank accidentally deposited about $1.1 million into his account.
The man, Ojo Eghosa Kingsley, was in Nigeria when First Bank mistakenly credited his account with around ₦1.5 billion.
Instead of immediately reporting the error, he allegedly spent part of the money.
When authorities discovered what had happened, some of the funds were recovered, but reports say he was still ordered to repay a large remaining amount.
He was later convicted and given the choice between paying a fine or serving time in prison.
He chose prison.
The story went viral because most people imagine what they would do if a bank accidentally dropped millions into their account.
