Arrange Public Probe On Death Of Nurse Mary Habila -Owokoniran Calls Out Minister Dave Umahi And Tinubu
The South West Zonal Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Rahman Owokoniran, has called on The Presidency and relevant security agencies to immediately order a transparent, independent, and credible investigation into the reported death of Mary Habila, found dead at the residence of the Honourable Minister of Works, David Umahi.
Owokoniran insisted that the unusual circumstances surrounding the incident generated widespread public concern and demanded more than mere verbal explanations.
He said the government owed Nigerians a duty to establish the facts through a thorough investigation.
He said: “The death of any Nigerian under unusual circumstances deserves serious government attention. When such an incident is reportedly connected to the residence of a serving public official, it becomes a matter of national concern that cannot be ignored.”
Owokoniran noted that the Minister’s Press briefing on the incident further heightened public interest and reinforced the need for an impartial probe to determine the actual cause and circumstances of Mary Habila’s death.
He therefore called on the Federal Government to immediately order a comprehensive autopsy, forensic examination, and, where necessary, a Coroner’s Inquest to establish the exact cause of death and remove every doubt surrounding the tragic incident.
“An autopsy is not optional in a case of this public importance. It is the most credible scientific process for determining the actual cause of death. Nigerians deserve the truth, and the truth can only emerge through a transparent investigation supported by an independent medical examination” the ADC chieftain insisted.
He added that the discovery of Mary’s body under the reported circumstances was a tragic development that warranted full government scrutiny.
“Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done,” Owokoniran said. “The government must demonstrate that no life is insignificant and that every suspicious death will receive the highest level of professional and impartial investigation.”
Owokoniran stressed that no public office holder should be above scrutiny and that the rule of law must apply equally to everyone, regardless of position or influence.
“The strength of any democracy lies not in protecting powerful individuals but in protecting the truth. Nigerians deserve transparency, accountability, and justice,” he submitted.
He urged the President to personally ensure that the findings of the investigation, including the autopsy report, were made public and that anyone found culpable, if any wrongdoing was established, would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
