A driver, whose unnamed boss was shot dead at a recent incident around the Ikire axis of the Ibadan-Ife highway, last week, has refuted police claim that the killing sprang from rampaging thugs and hoodlums and laid the blame on trigger-happy cops.
Police said they arrested four suspects over killing of two people at the incident that happened at Naira and Kobo Junction, Motor Park/Garage Area, Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, on Monday, August 24, 2026.
However, narrating the day’s tragic episode, the driver to one of the deceased, Azeez Isiaka Idowu, said: “I was coming from Ibadan, going to Bayelsa, I was driving a Sequa Jeep, we were only three in the vehicle, myself, the husband in the front and his wife at the back seat. I slowed down at the speed breaker under the Ikire bridge.
“I suddenly sighted a white Hilux with POLICE written on its door coming from Ikire town to the junction, they started shooting from the Hilux.
“And by the time I looked up, I saw that the man sitting in front of the car has been hit by a bullet, and he died.
I did not witness any fight or anything happening before the Hilux came to that junction. The gunshot came from the policemen inside the white Hilux. The bullet came inside from the front glass of the vehicle.”
Contrary to the driver’s narrative, the official Osun State Police Command report to the Press said suspected political thugs unleashed a violent confrontation at the Naira and Kobo area of Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of the state, in attempts to allegedly take control of the garage following the re-election victory of the state’s Governor, Ademola Adeleke.
Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, said the violence escalated after a group of about 30 armed hoodlums attacked officers responding to a distress call and forcibly snatched an AK-47 rifle from one of the policemen.
He said one of the hoodlums identified only as Ayewo subsequently used the stolen rifle to shoot sporadically, hitting three policemen and two passers-by.
The two passers-by later died from their injuries, while the injured policemen were taken to hospital for treatment, he said.
The arrested suspects were identified as Sikiru Ademola Adedeji, 21; Olalere Taiwo, 21; Olalere Ademola, 26; and Bankole Abiodun, 20.
