Oshiomhole Attacks Peter Obi Over Anambra Savings And Debt Claims
Former Edo State’s Governor Adams Oshiomhole has challenged former Anambra State’s Governor Peter Obi’s 2006-2014 record.
Oshiomhole, a serving Senator in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) spoke in an interview with the Naija Unfiltered podcast on SYMFONI, saying that Federal allocations came in naira, contrary to the savings Obi said was made in dollars.
Obi is Presidential Candidate of the opposition Nigerian DC.
In public, Obi has maintained that when he left office as Governor of Anambra State on March 17, 2014, he left behind about ₦75 billion in naira savings/investments.
Among other things, Adams said: “We got all our allocations from Federal Government in Naira as Governor, where did you get the Dollars you said you saved for Anambra State?
“You said the DG of Debt Management office organise an event for you because you didn’t borrow, you lied.”
He also identified $156 million in USD-denominated investments distributed across three Nigerian banks ($50 million in Access Bank, $56 million in Diamond Bank, and $50 million in Fidelity Bank).
However, Oshiomhole argued that Obi’s portrayal of government finances remained misleading.
However, he said the interview on Symfoni TV that Obi was not his personal enemy as they both experienced political opposition under past federal administrations.
The Anambra State Government has also disputed Obi’s assertions.
It asserted that external financing facilities and project-linked obligations tied to his administration totalled $123.77 million (or up to $127.77 million in some state communications), alongside legacy contractor or pension/water corporation liabilities (such as a 2019/2024 industrial court and out-of-court settlement for the Anambra State Water Corporation totalling over ₦1.56 billion).
