Peter Obi Signed One-Term Written Agreement With Me –Kwankwaso
The Vice-Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, says the party’s Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, signed a written agreement committing the former Anambra State Governor to serve only one four-year term if successful in the 2027 general election.
Kwankwaso made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, saying he was confident Obi would honour the agreement, and the presidency would return to the North by 2031.
Responding to a question on whether Obi’s one-term pledge was binding, Kwankwaso said he had no reason to doubt the former Anambra State Governor.
“I personally believe him. Based on what I know about him, I don’t think he will change his mind when the time comes. We are all gentlemen, and we have accepted to put it on paper,” he said.
Kwankwaso revealed that two separate agreements were signed to formalise the arrangement.
“We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us,” he said.
According to him, the agreement committed both leaders to working together to deliver a successful administration between 2027 and 2031 before power returns to the North.
“The agreement is that after four years, we will continue to work together as a party, as friends and brothers, so that after our four-year term, from 2027 to 2031, power returns to the North,” he said.
Explaining why he accepted the vice-presidential nomination after previously seeking the presidency, Kwankwaso said the arrangement was based on the need for equity, fairness and national balance.
He said both leaders agreed that the South should produce the President for a single term before power shifts back to the North, describing the understanding as a consensus aimed at strengthening national unity.
On whether he planned to contest the presidency in 2031, Kwankwaso said the party’s immediate priority was about securing victory in the 2027 presidential election while remaining mindful of its long-term political objectives./TRIBUNE
