Peter Obi Tells Nigerian Editors: I Won’t Abuse Tinubu, Soludo Because…
The Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, would not resort to personal attacks or abuse against the Nigerian leader or any other political office holder.
Obi stated this on Friday at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, held with the theme: “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive.”
The former Anambra Governor spoke against the backdrop of allegations by Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s team, who claimed that Obi and other predecessors left unsettled debts still being paid by the current regime.
Obi said political disagreements should centre on policies, governance and performance rather than personal attacks.
“I cannot abuse any Governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in Federal Government. I’ve never abused anybody. Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country, he has all my respect,” Obi said.
He, however, maintained that respecting public office holders should not prevent citizens and the media from scrutinising their decisions and performance.
“But I can argue on other issues, whether you’re doing well, or you’re not doing the right thing. That is allowed,” he added.
Obi also said the character and conduct of political leaders could shape the values of the wider society.
He urged media editors to scrutinise political leaders based on their records, statements and qualifications, stressing the importance of accountability in public office.
“We must, because the leader… the character and behaviour of the leader exemplifies the value of the society. And the leader must live it,” Obi said/LEADERSHIP
