Police, Law School Confirm Student Faith Ajoke Alayande, 23, Left Suicide Note Before Jumping To Death From 4-Storey Hostel
The Lagos State Police Command and the Nigerian Law School have confirmed the death of a 23-year-old student of the Nigerian Law School, Faith Ajoke Alayande, who died after allegedly jumping from the rooftop of a four-storey hostel building at the institution’s campus in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The Nigerian Law School said she dropped from the rooftop of a hostel at its Lagos Campus while undergoing an externship programme.
TheNewsGiant earlier reported that the deceased was found dead within the hostel premises on Friday, August 7, 2026 by another student, who alerted the Chief Matron of the Law School.
Upon receiving the report, the Matron proceeded to the scene, where the deceased was found lying on the ground within the hostel premises.
The Matron reported the incident at the Victoria Island Police Division at about 6:30am.
The spokesperson for the Lagos command of the Nigerian police, Abimbola Adebisi, said the incident was reported officially after the deceased was found unresponsive in the hostel premises on Friday.
Adebisi noted that the Matron of the institution reported the matter and disclosed that another student and a relative reportedly found a suicide note written by the deceased student, prompting them to search for her.
She noted that before they could locate her, she had allegedly jumped from the rooftop of the four-storey hostel building.
“I can confirm the incident. The deceased reportedly wrote a suicide note and, before her hostel mate and a relative could locate her, she jumped from the rooftop of a four-storey building,” Adebisi said.
“The Matron of the hostel reported the incident, prompting police operatives to visit the scene. Her body has been evacuated to a morgue for preservation.”
The PPRO added that an investigation was ongoing into the incident.
The institution disclosed this in a statement signed by its Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke O. Osho.
According to the Law School, Alayande was a student of its Enugu Campus but was temporarily accommodated at the Lagos Campus hostel for the duration of her externship.
The incident occurred at about 4 a.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026.
“Preliminary information indicates that, at about 4:00 am on Friday, 7 August 2026, the student fell from the rooftop of the hostel at the campus and, sadly, succumbed to the incident,” the institution said.
The Law School said it was working with relevant authorities and Alayande’s family to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death.
The Law School expressed sadness over the incident and extended condolences to Alayande’s family, colleagues and others affected by her death.
It also appealed to members of the public and the media to respect the family’s privacy while investigations continue.
“The Management of the Nigerian Law School respectfully appeals to everyone to honour the family’s wishes and refrain from any actions that may further compound their grief at this difficult moment,” the statement added.
