US President Joe Biden has mobilised search and rescue teams over the emergency caused by the ship that on Tuesday rammed into and caused the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge.
It has now been confirmed that the only people on the bridge when it collapsed was a pothole repair crew of eight, six of whom are presumed dead after plunging off the 185-foot bridge into the frigid water.
The US President tweeted on Tuesday:
“This morning, I convened senior members of my team for a briefing on the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge.
I’ve directed my Administration to ensure every federal resource is available to assist search and rescue efforts and response to this terrible incident.”
Meanwhile, reports say there were no vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it fell into the ocean thanks to heroic police officers who jumped into action.
A total of eight workers were reportedly on a meal break when the cargo ship crashed into the bridge.
Two of the eight workers were rescued, one who was hospitalized and one who refused treatment.
“He brushed his clothes off and wanted to see his family. He was shaken up a little bit but nothing major. I guess the good lord was on his side,” a first responder said.
The six other workers are presumed dead.
