Gunmen have killed a prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Yahaya Masusuka, in a suspected deliberate assassination attack at his residence in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State.

Known for challenging Islamic extremism and promoting religious tolerance, Masussuka had faced threats for his moderate views.

He was killed at his home in the town on Monday night, by gunmen on motorbikes as he stepped out of his house in Dutsin Ma Katsina state, to go for usual evening preaching, according to associates.

The respected cleric and his friend Adamu Abubakar were killed around 7:30pm.

Katsina police say they have launched a manhunt for the suspects.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda promised a thorough investigation, while calling for calm amid public grief and calls for justice.

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the brutal killing.

In a statement, Amnesty said: “The Nigerian authorities must immediately and effectively investigate the incident and ensure that those suspected of being responsible are brought to justice.

“Sheik Yahaya Masussuka had consistently used his preaching to promote cooperation, peaceful coexistence, interfaith dialogue and understanding among Muslim faithful. He was also notable for preaching against violent extremism and radicalization.

“The late Islamic cleric faced threats to life and intimidation —all through his life.”
