Nigerian Army says it now has in custody a soldier who criticised Lagos State’s Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for ordering the arrest of an officer driving against traffic.
Chief of Army Staff, Lt-General Taoreed Lagbaja, confirmed the arrest of the soldier but failed to reveal the identity.
According to Lagbaja, the soldier’s behaviour did not reflect the Nigerian Army’s values.
Sanwo-Olu on January 2, 2023 accosted Okada riders, including a soldier, riding against traffic on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
In the video that went viral, Sanwo-Olu shouted to his security detail: “Put him there; let your father come and rescue you. You’re telling me you are a soldier; that is the reason I’m going to lock you up, useless boy.”
Subsequently, several videos emerged on social media criticising him for his treatment of the soldier.
A scathing commentary by the yet unidentified soldier slammed the Governor for labelling the apprehended soldier as “useless.”
Responding to the many videos of soldiers criticising the Governor’s action, Lt-General Lagbaja said that most were fabricated.
