A soldier has reportedly put his service rifle to his head and shot himself dead in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Before committing suicide, the soldier whom eyewitnesses identified as Boyi Thankgod had been attached to the 35 Artillery brigade, Alamala in Abeokuta, the state capital.
He reportedly shot himself in the head while performing a guard duty on Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Monday January 15.
Photographs showed his lifeless body lying in the pool of his blood, with his head severely damaged by the impact of the bullet.
Sources said investigations were ongoing to reveal the circumstances that led to his action.
One source said: “The incident truly happened. Since yesterday, the military police have been investigating… all soldiers that were there when the incident happened, they were taken to the custody, took their statements and all the normal procedures.”
“We are just waiting for the military police officers to conclude the investigation in order to determine what actually led to the incident.”
Neither the Ogun State Brigade Command nor the Police Command has reacted officially to the incident.
