The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released corrected results it earlier withdrew for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with new computations showing over 1.2 million candidates passed with five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
WAEC earlier this week announced a temporary withdrawal of the 2025 WASSCE results for School Candidates due to technical issues found during an internal post-release review.
According to the organisation, the problem arose from bugs linked to a new paper serialization system implemented to curb examination malpractice in key subjects like Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics.
The Federal Ministry of Education also confirmed that the technical issue affecting the 2025 WASSCE in their press release.
Going by the revised data presented by the WAEC’s Head of Nigeria Office, Amos Dangu, at a press briefing in Lagos on Friday, a total of 1,239,884 out of the total 1,969,313 candidates who sat the examination passed.
The figure represents 62.96 per cent of candidates, and increased when compared to the initial figure of 755,043 candidates (38.32 per cent), which the Council had wrongly announced on Monday.
However, despite the review, 2025 performance still falls short of 2024, when 72.12 per cent of candidates obtained five credits, including English and Mathematics. This represents a decline of more than nine per cent.
The council said it discovered an error in the previously released result during an internal review and temporarily suspended result access before issuing the corrected figures.
The council has now advised candidates to recheck their results on its website.
While WAEC apologised for the confusion, it assured candidates and the public that measures are being put in place to prevent a recurrence.
Dangu said some candidates under state sponsorship would not be able to access their results due to unpaid examination fees.
