The 15th edition of the CAF Women’s African Cup of Nations will begin today in Morocco. It was postponed from 2024 due to calendar congestion.
This will be the 13th edition of the tournament.
The Women’s African Cup of Nations began in 1998 when Mrs Mariam Abacha donated a trophy for the tournament and Nigeria hosted the first edition.
However there had previously been a home and away tournament to select the African representative for the FIFA Women’s Championships in 1991 and 1995 and the winner of those tournaments (Nigeria) was recognised as the champion of Africa.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria have won nine WAFCON titles and have been crowned African Champions 11 times.
They have tagged this campaign with the theme “Mission X,” a mission to win the 10th WAFCON title.
