World Cup: Spain Hand Ronaldo Heartbreak, Tears After Beating His Portugal 1-0
It was heartbreak for Cristiano Ronaldo at the final whistle as his team was knocked out of the ongoing World Cup.
Spain beat Portugal 1-0.
Once the final whistle blew, tears rolled down the cheeks of Ronaldo as it was clear that his last chance at winning the coveted title had come to an end on Monday.
Some players also walked up to Ronaldo to pacify him, but that did not help as he kept crying.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup dream was ended by fierce international rivals Spain, who progressed to the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup thanks to a last-gasp winner from Mikel Merino.
Arsenal’s Merino pounced in stoppage time, running between Portugal’s centre-halves before finishing low to open the scoring.
Ronaldo, 41, said before this game that this would be his last World Cup and all eyes will now be on one of the greatest players in the sport’s history to see whether he walks away from international football.
Portugal Head Coach Roberto Martinez announced after the game that he is leaving his post after three and a half years in charge.
Spain, the reigning European champions, will now face Belgium for a place in the final four.
