Congo Boxer Roméo Katompa Burnt To Death In South Africa
Boxer Roméo Katompa, widely known by his nickname “Bololo,” died during the night of July 16–17 after being burned alive in an attack in Johannesburg.
Accounts from Congolese residents in the area indicated that his home was set on fire and his body was later discovered inside after the blaze.
Some witnesses say attackers set the house ablaze while he was still inside.
Other accounts said a mob accosted him on the streets and set him ablaze.
Initial reports said the tragedy is believed to be linked to the wave of xenophobic violence currently affecting several parts of South Africa, where foreign nationals have increasingly become targets.
Having lived in South Africa for several years, Katompa had built his life there, and was married to a South African woman with whom he fathered a child.
He served as a sparring partner for Junior Makabu, the former WBC Cruiserweight World Champion.
The exact circumstances surrounding his death have yet to be fully established, but the news has already sparked deep grief among Congolese nationals living in South Africa and across the African boxing community.
As of now, South African authorities have not issued an official statement on the exact cause of the incident.
