A 23-year-old Kano-based commercial Tricyclist, Awwalu Salisu, who returned a cash of N15 million left in his tricycle by a Chadian businessman in 2023, has been offered a scholarship up to PhD level of education to the tune of N250 million.
The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, during an event in Abuja on Tuesday, March 5, was the first to offer Awwalu scholarship to study at the Abuja-based Baze University up to Ph.D. level.
The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi and his running mate, Baba-Ahmed Datti, announced a scholarship for Auwalu.
The scholarship was announced at the LEADERSHIP awards and Conference in Abuja on Tuesday.
Receiving the award of Politician of the Year 2023, Obi, who was flanked by the Proprietor of the university and his Running Mate in the 2023 polls, Ahmed Datti, said Salisu’s feeding, schooling, accomodation and others would be handled by Baze University untill he graduated.
Thereafter, Niger State’s Governor Mohammed Umar Bago jocularly reacted by saying Labour Party could not be allowed to outshine the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In addition, the 44 Members of the Kano State House of Assembly (KNHA) have promised to contribute some percentage from their salaries to the young tricycle rider that returned missing N15 million to a Chadian owner in Kano.
Governor Bago consequently announced a N250 million scholarship award to Awwalu to appreciate his act of honesty and to encourage other young Nigerians to imbibe the virtue.
He said Awwalu will get N50 million scholarship each from him personally, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ministers, APC Governors Forum and Niger State government.
Bago added that he would name one of the road projects being undertaking in Niger State after the Kano Keke rider.

According to Leadership, Bago consequently announced a N250 million scholarship award to Awwalu to appreciate his act of honesty and to encourage other young Nigerians to imbibe the virtue.
He said Awwalu will get N50 million scholarship each from him personally, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ministers, APC Governors Forum and Niger State government.

Auwalu Salisu, the 22-year-old commercial Keke rider, said his friends and community people made a mockery of him for returning N15 million that a passenger mistakenly left in his tricycle.
The owner of the missing money, a businessman, had traveled from Chad to Kano, Nigeria, in order to do business with it.
Salisu said he decided to return the missing cash after he heard about it on radio.
The Keke driver was given a reward of N100,000 by the Arewa Consultative Forum.
Narrating how he stumbled upon the find that fateful day, Salisu recounted picking three passengers from Badawa to Kano’s Yan Kaba Motor Park.
However, later that day while he was washing his tricycle, he found a bag loaded with cash in it.
When converted, the cash amount of N15 million consists of N2.9 million and 10.130 million CFA.
“I then rushed to our house and showed my mother. It was wads of foreign currency. My mother quickly informed my father, who also informed his elder brother.
“When they came to the house, they decided we should not announce finding the money on radio, but wait till the owner announced it.
“I collected the numbers and called them five times but it was not answered. When I called the other number, it was picked at the third attempt. I spoke with the person and introduced myself as the tricyclist that carried them on Thursday.
“He was happy and arranged to meet at the Arewa Radio where they announced the missing money. We met there and they were happy. They gave me N400,000.
